The LUCIA building of the University of Valladolid has become the most sustainable building in Europe and all the Northern Hemisphere, due to aspects such as energy savings and respect for the environment.

This building, clear example of sustainable architecture, integrates two photovoltaic skylights and a curtain wall. These means for energy generation employ the first transparent Low-e PV glass made of amorphous silicon, manufactured by Onyx Solar.

With an installed power capacity of 6k Wp it generates 5,550k Wh of electricity yearly and prevents the release of 3.7 tons of CO2. This paradigm of energetic efficiency saves up to 60% of power consumption. No wonder it has achieved the LEED Platinum certification.

Onyx Solar has been awarded by the German CleanTech Institute as the “Most Innovative Application” for the Tanjong Pagar project.

The German CleanTech Institute aims to boost photovoltaic and electrical energy storage installations, recognizing the work carried out by the most forward-thinking companies of this sector.

Onyx Solar took part in the Tanjong Pagar project with the integration of a large pv pergola of 28,000 SqFt (2,600 Sqm) at the entrance of the building. The Tanjong Pagar, the tallest building in Singapore, has obtained the Platinum LEED certification. Its pergola by Onyx Solar features 850 amorphous silicon pv glass modules with a semi-transparency degree of 10%.

Onyx Solar® has been awarded a contract to supply 60,000 Sqft of semi-transparent photovoltaic glass for Somerset Development’s Bell Works Complex in Holmdel, New Jersey.

The project is part of the complete revitalization of the two-million-square-foot former Bell Labs facility into an iconic mixed-use, innovative metroburb.

The photovoltaic skylight will replace the existing glass, maintaining the original aesthetics of this Eero Saarinen’s architectural gem. A total of 3,200 units will be fabricated by Onyx Solar, and once it is completed, it will be the largest photovoltaic skylight in the world.

The new skylight, that will naturally illuminate the building while generate free and clean electricity from the sun, is not only aesthetically pleasant but also affordable. According to Ralph Zucker, President of Somerset Development, the economics of replacing the existing glass with photovoltaic glass was shockingly affordable”. Bursagaz, one of the main companies in the natural gas sector in Turkey, has opted for integrating Onyx Solar®’s photovoltaic glass in its new headquarters, which has obtained the LEED Gold certification.

 

Onyx Solar® has provided the building with a touch of originality by integrating a double skin of photovoltaic glass in the form of a mosaic, which is superimposed on the façade. The 315 amorphous silicon glass modules, measuring 500 mm x 700 mm, have a degree of transparency of 20% (L vision), enabling the uniform passage of light into the building and thus reducing the need for artificial lighting, as well as filtering out harmful UV and IR radiation.

This is a 4.1 kWp installation, generating approximately 3,400 kWh per year, to be used for building’s self-consumption, preventing the release of CO2 as well as other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
