The George Washington University installs the World’s First Walkable Photovoltaic Floor, developed by Onyx Solar.

The George Washington University recently partnered with Onyx Solar to install the first ever walkable, solar paneled sidewalk in the world, located at GW’s Virginia Science and Technology Campus in Ashburn, Virginia.

The sidewalk includes slip-resistant and semi-translucent panels that convert solar radiation into electricity with the use of semiconductors.

The total power installed is 42 Wp/m2 and generates an energy of 51 kWh/m2 per year.

“The Walkable Solar Panel Sidewalk is a great example of GW’s commitment to sustainability and a reflection of the university’s forward-thinking mentality. With an ever-increasing need for alternative energy solutions, it is critical to foster new trends such as this in building sustainable technologies”, said Eric Selbst.
